Some of the places offshore cooks and chefs, or their land based counterparts, can find work include the North Sea, Alaska's North Slope, the North Atlantic, and the Gulf of Mexico. Offshore jobs are also plentiful off the coast of Australia, Indonesia, and Africa. The Middle East is still full of opportunities as well.

Additionally, if you have aspirations beyond working as a cook or chef, landing work on an offshore oil rig is a fantastic method to get your foot in the door in an industry that will continue to grow by leaps and bounds over the coming decades. Many drillers have gotten their start as galley hands or cooks, made contacts, got hired as roustabouts and proceeded to work up the ladder of the drilling department or other fields. Once you are offshore, it is a lot easier to get to know people, and make friends in the other departments. If you do good work, when an opening comes up in another department that interests you, you'll have an in.

Pay is excellent for offshore cooking and catering jobs, especially in comparison the wages of their land-based counterparts. Though hours are long, you will generally get as much time off as on, usually 4 weeks downtime for every 4 week hitch. For the adventure seeker, this means having both the time and the money to see and experience exciting places, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
